Biden’s family was of Irish descent and grew up in a Catholic household. Biden’s parents had four children, of whom Joe Biden was the eldest. Biden’s siblings are James Biden, Valerie Biden Owens, and Elizabeth Biden.

Biden married his first wife, Neilia Hunter, in 1966. They had three children: Joseph “Beau” Biden III, Robert Hunter Biden, and Naomi Christina Biden. Tragically, in 1972, Neilia and her daughter Naomi were killed in a car accident during Christmas shopping. Biden’s sons Beau and Hunter were also in the car but narrowly escaped the calamity.
