Kanji Look and Learn

Kanji look and learn is a mnemonic technique for memorizing kanji characters. The process starts by identifying its radicals and then using them to form an imaginative story you can recall later, along with its meaning.

Additionally, it’s helpful to learn the stroke order, which runs from top-left down to bottom-right and makes reading handwritten kanji easier.

512 kanjis

Kanji Look and Learn is a Japanese textbook covering 512 beginner to intermediate kanji characters, from beginner-level to intermediate. Featuring fun illustrations and memory aids to help remember them quickly, plus common readings of each character and vocabulary words that use it, this book makes learning Kanjis easy!

This book does not provide activities to practice what has been learned; however, a companion workbook is available for this purpose and should serve students studying for JLPT N5 and N4 levels as it contains practice questions for these tests.

It teaches beginner and intermediate learners 512 basic kanji and 3,500 essential words through 32 lessons using stories and illustrations; each study covers meaning, mnemonic hint stroke, and order count readings as well as indexes so they can quickly locate specific kanji or words. Learning Kanji requires remembering that they don’t represent individual sounds as English letters do; instead, they represent whole words or concepts with different pronunciations for different kanji characters. To begin learning one, start by understanding its radicals, on-yomi readings, and kun-yomi readings; once this knowledge is secured, you can look up its meaning in dictionaries and practice its pronunciations.

Learning Japanese requires mastery of kanji characters. Although most Japanese use the hiragana and katakana alphabets, some words cannot be written using these alphabets alone. Knowing kanji makes learning other Japanese forms easier, such as reading and writing.

As your first step to understanding kanji, begin by studying their shapes. This will enable you to learn their stroke order – essential better when reading unfamiliar characters from books or newspapers. Once this skill has been acquired, reading unknown kanji will become much more straightforward, while it will also become simpler for you to recognize their meaning when encountered in everyday situations.

Easy to use

Kanji Look and Learn offers an engaging, simple method for memorizing kanji characters and words quickly and efficiently. Utilizing a mnemonic approach with pictures and sentences as memory aids, this book uses photographs and sentences to help remember their meaning and provides other valuable information such as on/kun readings, stroke order, and words that use them – making this an excellent introduction to Japanese. This tool can also serve as a great refresher course! Ideal for beginner learners.

This book covers hiragana and katakana, two Japanese syllabaries that comprise its written part. Designed to work alongside other materials for learning Japanese but can also stand alone, this product covers 512 basic kanji suitable for beginner learners to lower-intermediate level students alike, making this an excellent way to start studying the most commonly found Japanese text.

This book follows Heisig’s method but takes it one step further by introducing readers to 16 key kanji components often used later as building blocks of other kanji. There is also an interactive section where readers can practice writing the characters, select an appropriate reading for any given surface, recall its meaning, and various indexes at the back to enable self-study.

Perfect for beginners

A quality kanji learning program should enable you to grasp the fundamental characteristics of Japanese.
